Job description
The Public Interest Network is hiring a driven and detail-oriented administrator to help coordinate critical legal services provided by our in-house legal department to member groups in our national network.
The Public Interest Network operates and supports more than a dozen organizations – including PIRG, Environment America, and the National Environment Law Center – committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to change. Our network provides a platform for winning positive social change for the environment and the public interest.
Our work focuses on the problems that arise from America’s single-minded pursuit of endless economic growth: We’re still burning fossil fuels even though it’s changing the climate. We keep giving antibiotics to healthy livestock, even though it leads to “superbugs” that are antibiotic-resistant. We use plastic products for a few minutes only to throw them away so they pollute the oceans for centuries.
We focus on the big picture, but we are relentlessly pragmatic. We prioritize making a difference over making a statement and are willing to work with everybody to make change happen.
The Network’s in-house legal department is critical to our ability to do this work. The legal department, based in Denver, CO, provides legal services to member groups across the country on a wide variety of matters and practice areas. We are currently hiring a Legal Administrator to help the team operate effectively and efficiently.
Representative Responsibilities include:
Acting as the gatekeeper and coordinator for the department: Act as the Network’s contact person and gatekeeper for all new legal issues and inquiries.
Communicating and protecting TPIN’s employer and First Amendment rights: Effectively communicate legal issues and work with staff to protect the organizations’ interests in interactions with landlords, government agencies, vendors and contractors. Help to ensure the organizations’ First Amendment rights to go door to door, engage the public in public venues, and otherwise advocate on behalf of the public interest.
Ensuring corporate & charitable compliance: Work with group directors to ensure the health of Network organizations, including, but not limited to, working with boards of directors; drafting meeting agendas, resolutions, and minutes; and conducting regular internal compliance audits. Serve as the central administrator for about a dozen organizations—filing or overseeing corporate and charitable solicitation reports in over 30 states. Create and maintain effective tracking systems.
Helping create and manage legal department systems and projects: Assist in the creation and initial set up of new organizations and entities as necessary and manage other systems and special projects as needs arise.
Qualifications
Applicants must be goal-driven and sharp, with a track record of exercising independent judgment and discretion to solve problems. You should be driven by the idea of building a non-profit organization, have an outstanding work ethic, and the maturity to manage confidential and/or sensitive information. This is not an attorney position—J.D. is not required. Candidates with 1-4 years working with nonprofits, campaigns or with strong leadership experience are encouraged to apply.
Compensation & Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $31,000-38,000 and depends on relevant experience, education, and location. The Public Interest Network offers an excellent benefits package. Our benefits package may include medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents, needs-based student loan assistance, 401(k) plan with employer match, commuter benefit program, paid time off, parental leave and long-term disability insurance.
