Job description
We’re the country’s most respected training program for environmental organizers.
Are you determined to make the biggest positive impact you can on issues like climate change and clean water, but you don’t know where to start? Green Corps offers a yearlong, paid training program that will prepare you for a career in environmental organizing and the broader social change movement. Here’s how it works:
LEARN SKILLS FROM ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS
You’ll participate in eight weeks of intensive classroom training conducted by environmental organizers and leaders from a wide range of organizations and campaigns.
Our staff and trainers present overviews on the biggest issues facing our environment, as well as more specific training on proven organizing tactics. Topics include volunteer recruitment, campaign planning, public speaking, managing campaign staff, fundraising, running a field office and much more. You’ll learn how to run campaigns that inspire the public and build organizations and political support needed to save our planet.
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE ON REAL CAMPAIGNS
The bulk of your training will come through hands-on experience. You will use the skills you learn in your classroom training to work on some of the most pressing issues of the day.
Over the course of the year, you’ll lead three to five different campaigns in communities across the country. By working with several different campaign partners, you’ll gain experience tackling a diversity of issues and working in a variety of communities.
Recently, for example, a team of organizers worked on a campaign with the Wilderness Society to protect 30% of nature by 2030, turning out more than 500 people to campaign events and building a coalition of more than 200 organizations and businesses in support of the campaign.
The capstone of the Green Corps years is running a fundraising campaign office with the Fund for the Public Interest. Every Green Corps organizer will be placed for the summer with the The Fund to run a door-to-door canvass office to build grassroots membership, raise money, win campaigns and educate the public. It’s a critical piece of the Green Corps year as you learn how to manage paid campaign staff, run an outreach operation to reach thousands of citizens, and develop the skill of grassroots fundraising.
LAUNCH YOUR ORGANIZING CAREER
After our training program, we connect graduates with organizing jobs in the environmental and social change movement. Many of these groups need trained organizers to run their campaigns, and most Green Corps graduates are able to find professional positions immediately.
SUPPORT FUTURE ORGANIZERS
In order to ensure the Green Corps has both the resources it needs to run our training program and the organizers to participate, each year’s class will participate in fundraising and recruitment efforts.
Organizers participate in fundraising efforts throughout the year to raise critical support to train the next year’s Green Corps class. You’ll do this through tactics like sending letters to your friends and family, hosting fundraising events and phone fundraising, all of which are critical fundraising skills as well as an important way to pay it forward and support the Green Corps organizers who will follow in your footsteps.
In addition to raising funds to support the next year’s Green Corps class, organizers also help recruit the next year’s class of Green Corps organizers by going to college campuses and recruiting seniors to apply.
THE GREEN CORPS PROGRAM YEAR CALENDAR
The two components of the year are 1. Training: Green Corps organizers attend eight weeks of classroom training to learn the theory and skills of environmental organizing, 2. Campaigns: Green Corps organizers run three to five campaigns throughout the year to put their skills to work on pressing environmental issues.
LOCATION AND COMPENSATION
The target annual compensation for this position is $31,500 in the first year. Green Corps offers a competitive benefits package. Our benefits package may include medical, dental and vision insurance for employees and dependents, need-based student loan assistance, commuter benefit program, 401(k) with employer match, paid time off and long-term disability insurance. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
Green Corps organizers go where the environment needs them and wherever they can make the biggest impact. They could work on campaigns almost anywhere in the country, and while location preferences are considered for placements, we require all organizers to be geographically flexible.
